2nd Dan Black Belt

Our second head coach and joint founder of Yamato Judo, Roman Garai is a 2nd Dan blackbelt. Roman started in judo as his father was a judo coach. He recalls the very first time that he walked into his Fathers dojo and that day changed his life. To quote Roman, “I was totally hooked and have been ever since, judo has enriched my life, has provided me my greatest purpose, allowed me to travel, and meet many fabulous people around the world”.

“Judo for me is a philosophy, and is very much my passion. I have learnt that whilst being an art, it is at the same time a science. The more I learn, the more I realise how much I don’t know and just how much I still have to learn” Roman said. When you talk to Roman you can see, hear and feel this man’s passion for judo!

Roman competed in Slovakia for many years, where he achieved numerous victories and accomplishments, and qualified for the Junior National Team. Roman started Judo in 1984 and competed in all age categories. He is an expert in helping bodies achieve everything they can be. His main experience is in fitness training and has competed in various physique competitions in Australia.

He uses his knowledge of fitness training and adapts it to judo. The two skills work side by side and he gives both children and adults’ realistic direction in terms of what their bodies can achieve, when coached properly. Roman is our well-respected guru when it comes to understanding the limits and possibilities of the body.

Today, Roman is an Accredited Australian Judo Coach and holds an International Instructors License from the International Judo Federation Academy.

“True spirit of Judo is nothing but the gentle and diligent free spirit. Judo rests on flexible action of mind and body. The word flexible however never means weakness but something more like adaptability and open-mindedness. Gentleness always overcomes strength”.
